A DEVELOPMENTAL INITIATIVE FOR STUDENT DESIGNERS
African Fashion International gives young designers a day to shine! With development highlighted as an important focus, AFI will continue its FASTRACK initiative at Cape Town Fashion Week 2011. The 13th of July 2011 marks day one of CTFW. Foschini AFI Fastrack Day kicks off the shows at the Cape Town International Convention Centre.
AFI and Foschini are once again partnering to introduce FASTRACK to Cape Town. This developmental initiative is aimed at fast-tracking the careers of students and graduates in both the design and retail industries.
Chairman of African Fashion Internation, Dr Precious Moloi-Motsepe commented, “FOSCHINI AFI FASTRACK Day is a big part of our development programmes at AFI. We need to build and prepare the next generation of designers and design brands from South Africa and the continent. We want to ensure that more of our designers attain success in their careers. That means supporting them with the necessary tools of running a successful retail and fashion business. When our designers succeed, the whole industry benefits, and more jobs are created. AFI promotes excellence in fashion designers and fashion brands from South Africa and the continent. We want to give the young designers and others interested in the fashion industry, a head start in their careers. That is what AFI Fastrack day is all about.”
The objectives of the day are to inform, educate, entertain and develop young students and graduates in their future careers. “Foschini is committed to supporting and developing talent for the retail industry. The Foschini AFI Fastrack Day in collaboration with The Cape Town Fashion Council (CTFC) is the perfect platform to partner in an initiative that is sustainable with the primary focus of fastracking student careers for the future” says Alex Harris, GM of Foschini.
As a follow on from Foschini AFI Fastrack at Joburg Fashion Week, Cape Town’s event will feature a graduate design competition together with a strong recruitment focus, interactive workshops, street fashion and entertainment. Experts from Foschini will be on hand to facilitate workshops, taking interested students and graduates through the entire supply chain process within the retail cycle.
The winners of the graduate design competition will win an internship programme with The Foschini Group. These young designers will be exposed to the world of design and retail as they are taken through a 4-6 week supply chain process. They will garner firsthand experience of the world of retail. In addition to the invaluable exposure to design, pattern-making and manufacturing processes, the experience will equip the new graduates with the commercial and business skills they require to be successful in the retail environment. Their journey at Foschini will culminate in their capsule collections being manufactured and retailed in three Foschini flagship stores countrywide. The value of the internship is in excess of R100 000.
Access to career opportunities is also provided for student designers. TFG (The Foschini Group) Recruitment will present these opportunities at Foschini AFI Fastrack Day on 13 July. An SMS competition on the day will put entrants in line to win a gift card loaded with R20 000 for a lifestyle upgrade at any one of the 14 TFG (The Foschini Group) stores.
FASTRACK FRIDAYS at design schools in Cape Town are an exciting build-up to the event. To promote Foschini AFI Fastrack, both TFG (The Foschini Group) Recruitment, Cape Town Fashion Council and AFI will be hosting Fastrack Fridays at five colleges.
The CTFW Fastrack event will have its point of distinction in THE FACE OF FASTRACK. The aim is to find a fresh face in an amateur model, and launch her career with a lucrative modelling contract. Castings will take place on 1 July, with the winner announced at the Foschini AFI Fastrack day on 13 July.
